>> good morning, good sunday morning, everybody. veterans day 2012 is going to be a winner by any measure. bright sunshine out there already and temperatures climbing very quickly out of the 40s and into the 50s. there's a live look at our tower cam looking towards downtown bethesda under a blue sky. already near 50 here in washington. near 50 also in montgomery county. martinsburg, west virginia, already at 47 degrees and your planner for today, temperature in the low 50s here. we'll be real close, maybe even above the 70-degree mark before the day is done, and staying mild overnight tonight as well. we'll talk about tomorrow and all the big changes and the rain drops arrive. coming up. this morning, people around the country are celebrating veterans day. people are honoring the countless men and women who fought for our country. >> here in the nation's capital,

it's a somber day of remembrance and a day of giving back. derrick ward is on the national mall where several events are scheduled today. >> reporter: we are here at the world war ii memorial, where an event will be getting under way any minute now. may have actually started. there's going to be a wreath laying here and notes from the keynote speaker that tloed this -- led to this memorial. this is a group from illinois. they'll be participating as well. for these people that take part in this freedom flight, the quick time march may have slowed to a leisurely roll, but they remain proud of having served the country and the cause of freedom in world war ii. this is their day. started out as armistice day, later became veterans day, but the meaning has pretty much stayed the same. it honors all who served members of this freedom flight.

we actually talked to some of them by why they're here and their experiences and what it all means to them. >> i have a son and a son-in-law, both in vietnam. i had two brothers in world war ii. i think it would be good if every boy had to spend one year after school in service for our country. >> it's very fortunate with most of the patients we got, most of them were injured badly enough that they didn't have to go back to service, so they had an awful lot of patients. >> normally, you see a couple people from the group, friends of the world war ii memorial. they're actually in the midst of an excellent project. they are collecting histories from some of the veterans.

they talk to people like bob dole, people who participated in those campaigns that we all know about, bhutan, things like that. get those on the website. if you go to the tab that says meet the vets, you hear what it's all about. we're live at the tidal basin. a picture-perfect day for all those wonderful celebrations. >> very brave men and women out there. thanks, derek. right now, some of our veterans are eating breakfast with the commander in chief. the president, the vice president and their wives are hosting a special veterans day breakfast with veterans and their families. later the obamas and the bidens will attend the roowreath layin ceremony at the arlington cemetery at the tomb of the unknown soldier. a nice crowd out today. we want to share with you later

this morning a wreath is going to be laid at george washington's tomb at mount vernon. our first commander in chief. rockville, maryland, will honor its local vets with a ceremony in veterans park along rockville pike starting at 11:00 this morning, and also, donald wayland will deliver remarks in gaithersburg. this morning, new details are emerging about the resignation of one of our country's most decorated veterans. turns out now david petraeus was not the original focus of an fbi investigation. andrea mitchell first broke this story. she has more on how the fbi inadvertently found out about the general's affair. >> reporter: general david petraeus tumbled from the highest levels of government service after act thcknowledgint he called unacceptable behavior, an extramarital affair.

another woman not related to petraeus felt she was being harassed and complained to the fbi. in recent weeks, the fbi traced the e-mails to broadwell and only stumbled upon the relationship with petraeus as a result. >> it's so politically sensitive that my guess is the decision was made near or at the top level of the fbi to sit down with general petraeus and have a discussion with him and let him know that this information had been discovered. >> reporter: broadwell has not been shy about her access to petraeus, co-hosting a barbecue with jon stewart. she spoke often about her connection to the cia director acknowledging it rubbed some in the military the wrong way. >> i was imbedded with general petraeus in afghanistan and it was a little confusing because i'm also military reservist with a top secret cia clearance and then some so. a lot of my former peers didn't know how to treat me.

>> reporter: the investigation into broadwell's e-mails came to a head on tuesday, the election day. the first the intelligence community learned of it. the president did not learn until thursday and met with petraeus who offered to resign that day. the president said he wanted to think it over, but accepted the resignation friday. some feel he should have left petraeus keep his job. >> there's no criminal conduct involved. it's base clay matter for him and his family. it's not the conduct we encourage. it's not the best conduct. but we're talking about a man of great talent. >> many who know petraeus say he was just coming into his own at the cia after a rocky transition after his military career. >> it's a very different kind of operation where cia officers pride themselves on being difficult, on pushing back, and in the early months, that was difficult for petraeus. >> reporter: andrea mitchell, nbc news, washington. >> there will be more on this story later this morning on "meet the press." andrea mitchell will be on to discuss the latest developments. you catch "meet the press" right

here on nbc 4. new this morning, flis howard county are looking for a suspect at a shooting at a fast-food restaurant. a man was shot multiple times at a taco bell in minstrel way in columbia. police did not release any more information on that suspect. also this morning an explosion killed two people and forced evacuation of an entire neighborhood in indiana. you see the flames that spread from the explosion. the blast happened around 11:00 last night near indianapolis. police evacuated more than 200 people and set up a shelter at a nearby elementary school. the broadcast destroyed two homes and damaged several others. police are working for the man who sexually assaulted two men in the district. the women tell police the men pulled up to them in two separate cars and forced them to

perform a sex act. the men stole one of the women's cell phone and a coat. so far the police have not made any arrest in this case. a motorcycle struck a pedestrian killing two people involved. the crash happened yesterday afternoon in the 3900 block of branch avenue in suitland. police say the pedestrian identified as 64-year-old harry lee of clinton, maryland, was not in the crosswalk at the time of the crash. the driver of the motorcycle, a 40-year-old, jonathan evans of lor to lorton, also died in that crash. the family of 17-year-old linda berry and joshua mubain were seen leaving court. mohamed kadir's body was found near gallaudet university. the teenagers are accused of robbing and then shooting kadir. co-workers say violence against cabbies is all too common. >> at nighttime, it's pretty dangerous. the city is quiet. and we want the city to at least

look after our cab drivers. >> both teens are being held without bond. this morning in decision 2012, the final votes are in from last week's presidential election. voters from florida, which was the final state to have a winner declared, gave the state to president obama, solidifying his already certain re-election victory. here's how the final electoral map looks. with florida's 29 electoral votes, the president raises his total to 332 over mitt romney's 206. the president defeated romney in the sunshine state by 74,000 votes. unlike some elections past, this time florida was not the state that determined which candidate won. some say the reason it took so long for florida to count those votes was because there wasn't enough time for early voting. the time right now is nine minutes after 9:00. still ahead, crimes of opportunity. the extreme measures some people took to make a quick buck after

ten years old. you boy dart past the workers. police say he got away with $900. police have not made any arrests. >> so police arrested a connecticut man accused of stealing a car from a chinese food delivery man. what he does next blows our mind. he goes out and he actually makes the deliveries. police say 45-year-old keith heinz stole the car and finished the delivery run and then pocketed all the cash. police caught him while he was out making those deliveries. hines faces several charges. the bat over what will happen to actor sherman helmsley's body appears to be over. he played george jefferson on "the jeffersons." there have been multiple challenges to his will, but a judge has now ruled helmsley's longtime friend can go ahead can his burial. helmsley's half brother says he is going to appeal the ruling. next, just how long it could be until some new york sandy victims get their power back on.

east coast as thousands remain without power in new york. some on long island say they are fed up and they have been in the dark for too long. >> we are cold and we are tired and we want our power now. >> hundreds stormed the power company's office yesterday, demanding crews restored their power. power companies are working around the clock, but say the remaining homes might not have power until tuesday. two congressmen say they are requested federal aid. the state of new jersey has filed charges against eight businesses for what it says is price gouging. seven gas stations are accused of hiking prices by as much as 59%. the state as one gas station charged customers $5.55 a gallon. a hotel is accused of raising room rates by more than 30%. new jersey has more than 2000 consumer complaints. >> it's crazy to think that it's been already two weeks. seems like just yesterday. for people out there, it's been

minnesota and iowa. temperatures have fallen 40 to 50 degrees in less than 24 hours. and that powerhouse of a cold front is heading in our direction. luckily for us, it's going to moderate quite a bit between now and the time it arrives here. but you'll notice the change in temperatures dramatically tuesday afternoon. delightful sunshine today. get outside and make the most of it, because this is going to be the last stellar day for at least a little while. clouds will slowly be on the increase late tonight and tomorrow. we'll start without a peek or two of sunshine, but clouds come in very quickly tomorrow and rain chances arrive first thing on tuesday morning, probably before you're even up tuesday morning. so today, sunny, mild, and delightful. get outside and take a walk around the national mall. it's going to be a great day to go through all the monuments and memorials. tomorrow, cloudy and moist. rain chances probably don't arrive until after dark tomorrow. the mild weather is today and tomorrow. and then on tuesday, our high

temperature tuesday will probably occur before the sun is even up. temperatures will fall back into the 40s during the afternoon. we might even be in the 30s before tuesday night is over. and then chilly november sunshine for the rest of the week. >> sounds good, chuck, thanks. on this veterans day, a young service member is going the distance to honor those who came before him. the alexandria nate sieve on a journey to help veterans and wounded warriors re-adjust to life back home. a race across the country starts at home. 24-year-old brendan o'toole prepared in arlington for a trek that takes him from the west coast of california to the east coast of maine. the marine is running 3,600 miles and each step is tracked bay smart phone app that shows his every move. but what's on a much bigger screen inspired the long

distance run. >> i've seen "forrest gump" many times. >> o'toole is a military man, a tcu-williams alum who enlisted in the marines and fulfilled his duty. he spent months on the ground in afghanistan and haiti helping earthquake victims. >> i'm getting real excited here. >> but now o'toole is at the virginia sports medicine institute training. the goal is to finish 15 miles five days a week for eight months. he recruited some of his family and friends to help get his plan up and running. >> the majority, 99% of alexandr alexandrians who built a wonderful little organization here. ror tool hopes the marathon run will bring attention to veteran causes. >> one of my friends that came back, some of the things he's been dealing with as far as pressure an anxiety, actually ended up taking his own life because of that. suicide is probably one of the

you can catch that game on nbc sports network. and this was the game to watch. a major upset for one of college football's top teams. 15th ranked texas a&m knocked off number one alabama in a nail biter yesterday. the aggies led for the entire game, but then the crimson tide made things very interesting at the end. alabama was threatening to score when texas a&m intercepted a pass, securing the win over the top team in the country 29-24. >> just look at the fans' faces there. the aggies won thanks to the help of their freshman quarterback johnny manziel, better known as johnny football. now his family is trying to make sure he's the only johnny football. they are working to trademark the nickname so he can profit once he leaves college. texas a&m is also looking to profit from the success of their quarterback. the team store is selling his jersey for the first time this season. and here more locally, huge

spiritual health of the vets. >> thousands of american veterans are returning home without a job and organizers of a veterans career event tried to change just that. yesterday, george mason university held his second annual job fare for vets and its families. organizers say they hope to hire 200 vets with yesterday's event. and then local companies making sure they hired veterans. two marines moving company offers vets a great employment opportunity when they return home. marquis johnson says he had trouble finding work until two marines moving came along. he wants them to have faith that they will have a career. >> i had plenty of interviews and people shake my head thanks for what you did in the country and everything like that. i didn't get the job. it's not over. you got to have yourself.

>> the company was looking to hire 50 veterans in 50 days leading up to today and they're still looking for some help. you can learn more by going to twomarinesmoving.com. this veterans day, an organization is working to help disabled vets learn about the benefits they can get. there is a talk today at the willow tree inn in gaithersburg at noon. legal professionals will be there to explain v.a. benefits and how disabled vets can apply for them. if you can't make it to today's eve event, there's another one wednesday night at 6:00 at ann arendell community college. we're hearing from a passenger onboard a southwest airlines flight that skidded at the denver international airport. the boeing 737 was coming in from oakland, california, yesterday afternoon. the nose wheel slid off the taxiway. >> it seemed like he was having a hard time getting the plane to

slow down and it was going faster than he wanted it to. the next thing we knew, it was making a strange grinding sound and he veered off to the right, and there was no more runway underneath us. >> no one at the plane was hurt. at the time there was light snowfall and freezing temperatures. >> authorities in kentucky say there were no serious damage reports after a 4.3 earthquake rattled the bluegrass state. the quake shook the southeast part of the state yesterday afternoon. it was also felt in neighboring states, including far southwest virginia. residents say the ground shook for about 15 seconds. the u.s. geological survey says the quake was considered light and no one was hurt. at least 12 people are dead from a strong earthquake in myanmar. a 6.8 quake hit earlier this morning with a 5.8 aftershock. witnesses say some of the victims were killed in a bridge collapse. the quake also caused damage to a monostair and temples in the area. part of the dulles airport

access road will be closed during overnight periods. the eastbound lanes between route 123 and the dulles connecter road will close monday through friday from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and saturday. traffic will detour on to the dulles connecter road. crews will be doing drainage installation work on the overhead rail bridges. the three-day veterans day weekend means metro is doing track work on three of its lines. on the orange line, buses are replacing lines. the ballston and virginia square stations are closed as well. the work lasts through the day tomorrow. coming up next, how children in prince george's county are helping to transform their

painting the mural yesterday. it's part of prince george's county's transforming neighborhoods initiative. >> it's pretty because it shows everything that the kids do in the school and things they like to do and lets them express themselves by painting it. the school turned out to be awesome and the whole program is good for the community and it changes everybody. >> the artist won a contest to create the mural. he teaches art at the henson valley monastery school in maryland. this week's wednesday's child loves animals, especially dogs and would like to have one of his own, but first he needs to place to call home. news4's barbara harrison introduces us to william. >> reporter: what a welcome we got from georgia, the golden retriever. what do you think of georgia? >> she's great. >> reporter: 16-year-old william loves dogs, so this was a great

way to be greeted, a shop in arlington that has everything for man's best friend, even a dog trainer who comes periodically to work with dogs like georgia, who dropped by. william enjoyed helping out with a little training session. >> william is a self-proclaimed country boy. he loves anything outdoors. he loves to swim. he's very hands on. he likes to work on vintage cars. he also likes playing football. he loves animals. he's a big animal lover. >> william, who's had to move from one foster home to another over the past eight years, says he once had a dog at one of his placements. >> i taught it how to sit. and basically, it was my dog. so i just trained it. like it was my dog. a black lab. no one was taking care of it in my house, so i took care of it. >> but he never cooked up dog biscuits like laura does. she gave us a lesson, letting william add all the ingredients,

70 degrees later today. right along the immediate coastline where it was a milder night, temperatures in the low 50s. any hint of a bay breeze will hold your temperatures in the 60s close to the bay later on this afternoon. a lot of folks since the redskins have the week off are focusing on the reigns. ravens hosting the oakland raiders today in baltimore. game is at 1:00. from 1:00 to 4:00 this afternoon, temperatures mid to upper 60s. tons of sunshine and a nice south breeze. good luck for the home team. here's the storm system that generated the snow in the video. big drops indeed. yesterday, lincoln, nebraska, 78 degrees. they're down below freezing this morning, so they dropped 50 degrees in about 12 hours. luckily, we're not facing that kind of an extreme temperature drop around here. but when that front does arrive, we'll go from the lower mid 50s early tuesday morning back down into the upper 30s by late

tuesday afternoon into tuesday evening. so it will be a dramatic drop, but it won't be that kind of dramatic. delightful sunshine for today. i hope you have a chance to get outside and enjoy it. clouds sneaking back into the area late tonight. high pressure off the coastline is going to allow a little bit more of than atlantic moisture. you'll probably get a little sunshine front half of the day tomorrow, but not much sunshine. by about lunchtime tomorrow, almost everybody should be covered up by clouds. it will stay dry for most of us all the way through the end of the day tomorrow. rain chances really start to ramp up out towards the shenandoah valley. and in town, probably going to be raining before you go back to work on your tuesday morning commute. sunny and nice today, nothing to worry about. highs near 70. back into the mid and upper 60s again tomorrow, but with all the clouds around, it won't look or feel quite so pretty as outside today. there's the rest of the week. chilly rain drops on tuesday followed by very chilly sunshine
